Southaven High School Jazz Band

Membership:

Membership in The Southaven High School Jazz Band will be limited to those students who have demonstrated an above average proficiency on their chosen instrument. Instrumentation will also be limited to those instruments considered idiomatically correct for this instrumental medium.

Students must own a properly maintained instrument. If necessary and available, the use of school owned instruments will be designated by the band staff. These instruments will be issued in good playing condition. The maintenance and care of these instruments will be the responsibility of the student they are issued to through school instrument contracts. Students participating on a school owned instrument will be assessed a maintenance fee of $75.00 per semester in order to ensure the normal life expectancy of the instrument through year end cleaning and repair.

Students will be graded, by use of a criteria reference measurement tool, on required skills to ensure individual growth. These skills may include musical selections as well as technical exercises.

Rehearsals:

This class meets daily during second period as a part of the regular, credited class schedule of SHS.

Southaven Indoor Percussion

Membership:

The Southaven Indoor Percussion Ensemble is an extra-curricular ensemble that meets outside of the normal school hours. Membership in The Southaven Indoor Percussion Ensemble will be limited to those students already enrolled in The Southaven Band Program. Wind players will be allowed to participate with the willingness to broaden their musical experiences through percussion instruction.

Educational emphasis will be the development of percussion and movement skills, as well as the skills necessary to perform within an ensemble.

The use of school owned instruments will be designated by the band staff. These instruments will be issued in good playing condition. The maintenance and care of these instruments will be the responsibility of the student they are issued to through school instrument contracts. Students participating on a school owned instrument will be assessed a maintenance fee of $50.00 per semester in order to ensure the normal life expectancy of the instrument through year end cleaning and repair.

Rehearsal and competition schedules will be released at the beginning of the spring semester. Our competition schedule will be based upon The Mississippi Indoor Association schedule.

Additional costs outside of the normal band account will include:

Uniform Fee: Estimate $50.00

Music & Drill: Estimate $50.00

Travel: Estimate $50.00

Instrument Rental (if needed): $50.00

 

Rehearsals:

This organization is an extra- curricular opportunity that rehearses after school from 4:00 – 6:00 on Tuesday and Thursday beginning in the month of January. These rehearsals will be moved to 6:00 – 8:00 when after-school Wind Ensemble rehearsals begin. Mississippi Indoor Competitions are held on weekends beginning in the middle of February until MIA Championships the last weekend of March. The SHS Indoor Percussion competition schedule will be released when the MIA schedule is released.
