The Southaven High School Marching Band
The Southaven High School Marching Band is an extra-curricular activity which takes place outside of the normal school hours. The SHS Marching Band is open to the students of The Southaven High School Band Program and the Southaven High School Colorguard. These students must demonstrate and exemplify good moral and social behavior. The Southaven High School Marching Band will work hard to build commitment, promote pride, and build a sense of "family," as we entertain our audience and boost team and school spirit with high quality performances on and off the field. The Southaven High School Marching Band provides a RECREATIONAL GOAL by providing all members an opportunity for worthwhile use of leisure time and for an emotional and physical outlet in an activity that is different from any other the school has to offer. It also provides a social experience with varied cross-sections of the school’s student population.
The MUSICAL AND VISUAL GOALS of the Southaven High School Marching Band are to perform well-written musical arrangements, routines, and drill in an exciting manner at the highest level of competitive performance quality possible. This can only take place through a concerted "Team Effort".
"We will achieve greatness...I will contribute"
The Southaven High School Marching Band is funded primarily through monies raised by our booster organization, not The Desoto County School District. Our school district does provide some funding. However, it is not nearly enough to cover the expenses of a competitive marching band program. Included in these expenses are instruments, travel, music, programming, outside instruction and supplies. As a result, each participating member is expected to honor his/her financial responsibilities through a "fair share" band account.
The amount of each student’s band account is determined by evenly dividing our expected expenses by the number of participants. Band accounts may be paid through fundraising (fundraisers will be scheduled by the booster organization), and/or cash. Band account payments will be scheduled for the first Friday of each month during the fall semester through the month of October. Failure to maintain an up to date band account may result in removal from the competitive marching band. However, that student may continue to participate in the Southaven High School Band as defined on page 4 of this handbook.
Rehearsals:
The SHS Marching Band rehearses after school on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00. Performances and any extra rehearsals are listed on the Fall Calendar included in this handbook.
